Ken Yap trained as a photographer and upon retirement started researching into the Chinese Peranakan culture. Preferring to remain low profile and observing human nature and behaviour, he is nevertheless a member of the South-East Asian Ceramic Society, West Malaysia Chapter. Some of his collection have been featured in “Beads in time: towards a chronology of nonya beadwork” by Hwei-Fe'n Cheah (Hong Kong: Arts of Asia vol. 34 no. 4 – July-August 2004); Phoenix rising by Hwei-Fe'n Cheah (Singapore: NUS Press, 2010); Manek Mischiefs by Lee Su Kim (Malaysia: Marshall Cavendish, 2017); Oey Soe Tjoen: Merajut asa dalam sejuta impian by Widianti Widjaja (Indonesia: 2020); Heritage Asia Magazine, Prestige Magazine and The Peranakan Magazine, amongst other publications.
